1. Cross someone’s path
Ungkapan ketika bertemu dengan seseorang yang tidak terduga.
Contoh: Agus swore she would scream if a spider crossed her path.
2. A friend in need is a friend indeed
Berarti teman sejati ialah yang selalu ada saat dibutuhkan. Bukan sebaliknya yang menghilang ketika ada kesulitan.
Contoh:
Wati has lost her key in the market, so she has nowhere to stay for the night, but Ika suggested that she stay at her place. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
3. Make friends
Slang/idiom ini berarti 'berteman'. Atau mencari teman.
Contoh: We hope Reza will soon make friends at school because he feels so lonely now.
4. Build bridges
Slang/idiom yang digunakan untuk menunjukkan sebuah hubungan pertemanan yang sedang ingin dirajut kembali. Karena mulai ada jarak antara mereka.
Contoh: A local charity community is working to build bridges between different ethnic groups in Indonesia.
5. Friends in high places
Berarti teman yang memiliki posisi strategis di sebuah tempat.
Contoh: Dewa is very rude to other workers just because he has some friends in high places.
6. Be an item
Di Indonesia, kita lebih mengenal slang/idiom ini dengan Teman Tapi Mesra (TTM). Slang/idiom ini berarti dua orang yang berteman, namun memiliki kedekatan yang intim.
Contoh: Budi and Lisa began seeing each other and were an item for almost Six Months.
7. At odds with someone
This is said about people who have a conflict or disagreement. The word “odds” means controversy, inequality, or chances.
For example, The director and the artist were always at odds while making that short film.
8. Birds of a feather
Ungkapan ini digunakan untuk menunjukkan dua orang teman yang memiliki ketertarikan sama. Baik itu tentang hobi maupun prinsip hidup.
Contoh: Tia prefers the same clothes as me. Well, birds of a feather flock together.
9. Man’s best friend
Idiom/slang ini merefleksikan sebuah hewan peliharaan. Bermakna setia. Ungkapan ini digunakan untuk mengganti istilah Teman Setia.
Contoh: A study of man’s best friend shows that the relationship between humans and dogs started 100,000 years ago, and that’s a surprising fact, I suppose!
